50 years of town trading
Members of Clitheroe Country Market enjoyed a busy, birthday market last Tuesday as they celebrated 50 years of trading in Clitheroe. Visitors were treated to free tea and coffee and a piece of special celebration cake baked by Mary Rushton.
The cake was cut by the Mayor of Clitheroe Stewart Fletcher and Elizabeth Backhouse (chair of CCMkt) gave a short history of the town’s cooperative country market, formerly known as the WI Market. Display boards were on show with photographs and press cuttings from the last half century.
Margaret Gornall, Bob Smith, Flossie Rowbottom and Sue Sumner, four of the longest serving members all received bouquets of flowers from market manager Ruth Cowperthwaite who also gave thanks to Elizabeth Backhouse for all her support.
Other visitors included the chairman of the Lancashire Country Markets Jim Pawson and the Area Market Advisor Liz Mogg who in her report to Ruth C stated:
“All in all a professional and very well run market with a lovely, happy atmosphere. You should, and I am sure you are, proud of your team of enthusiastic ladies and gentlemen.”
